Itch.io is a marketplace for self-publishing video games that stands out because it has so many user-made games of all kinds and price ranges. Not like Steam or Epic Games, the listings aren't moderated or edited very much. This means that users can post whatever they want (as long as it's not illegal or similar material), and they have full control over how to make money from their work.
The people who make games for Itch.io can even make them free or let people choose to pay for them. One way to use this is to give away free versions of paid games, like a trial version. However, many writers choose to give away full projects for free. While many of these aren't worth your time, this list of the fifteen best free itch.io games includes some that really shine.
Bloodborne PSX
- Developer : LWMedia
- Gameplay/Genre : Action
Bloodborne PSX is a free remake of the first few hours of the Bloodborne game by FromSoftware. It looks like old PlayStation games. A big type of music about itch. The horror PSX genre makes games that are meant to look like they were made in the early days of 3D gaming, and Bloodborne's world seems like a good fit for this style of art.
You can play Bloodborne PSX if you never had a PlayStation and missed out on the normal game. It looks and feels a lot like the regular game. But people who have played the game before will love how the fighting has been tweaked to feel more like it did on the PS1 and how the game's art style is made up of polygons, which force players to use their imaginations to make the already scary monsters look even scarier.
DELTARUNE (Chapters One & Two)
- Developer : Toby Fox
- Gameplay/Genre : RPG
The new game from Undertale creator Toby Fox is called DELTARUNE. It has been in the works for more than a few years. The full game isn't out yet, but Fox has put out two Chapters that make up the first two parts of the game. Along with that, there are at least twelve hours of games to go through. It's similar to Undertale in a way, but with new characters, settings, and ways to fight.
You can get the first two chapters of DELTARUNE for free on itch.io. When the rest of the chapters come out, they will probably also be available for free. At some point, DELTARUNE will be sold as a whole game, but for now, Undertale fans should be happy with these two parts and the ones that are yet to come.
Get In The Car, Loser!
- Developer : Love Conquers All Games
- Gameplay/Genre : RPG
You can play the paid version of Get In The Car, Loser! for free, which lets you get a feel for the game's bright and modern world. Compared to the turn-based RPGs it was based on, its active-time RPG features feel fine-tuned, and its LGBT-themed story, characters, and art style feel just as modern. This is a good Itch.io game that changes up a popular genre in a good way.
It's a crazy road trip adventure with a mix of modern and magical settings. Players go from filling up the main character's car with gas at the gas station to fighting the Machine Devil with the Sword of Fate. The person who made the game says it's about "finding yourself, whatever the f**k that means."
Right Click To Necromance
- Developer : Juicy Beast
- Gameplay/Genre : Hack N' Slash
The idea behind Right Click to Necromance is simple: left-click to control your army of bones, and right-click to use your necromancer skills to bring your enemies back to life. It was made for the 2015 Indie Speed Run jam in less than 48 hours, which is pretty amazing. It's one of the best Itch.io games that was made so quickly.
One person made the game, but two other people worked on the songs for it. In such a short amount of time, it's amazing what a small team can do. The game's gameplay is also very interesting and worth checking out.
FAITH
- Developer : New Blood Interactive
- Gameplay/Genre : Horror
The low-fidelity horror game FAITH is a lot like the games that came out during the MS-DOS and Atari eras, but it's not at all like the innocent games that came out during those times. Not because of how it looks, but because it's one of the scariest games on Itch.io, and horror game fans are sure to enjoy it.
There are three chapters so far, but the third one is still in the demo stages. The game is free, but if players pay the creator a dollar, they can get a "deluxe" version of the game with extra features, the game's creepy soundtrack, and updates before other players.
Friday Night Funkin'
- Developer : The Funkin' Crew (ninjamuffin99, phantomarcade, eviksk8tr, kawaisprite)
- Gameplay/Genre : Rhythm/Music
There's a good reason why Friday Night Funkin' is one of the best independent rhythm games ever made. You can change a lot of things about it, the controls are very easy to use and respond quickly, and the mods and special tracks make it almost impossible to stop playing.
This game's art style and music are reason enough for players to check it out if they haven't already. Even though it was only made by a small group of people, it gets updated often and has a huge fan base. It's also often listed on the front page of Itch.io as one of the top 10 games.
Juice Galaxy
- Developer : Fishlicka
- Gameplay/Genre : Open-World RPG
Juice Galaxy is a crazy exploration sandbox game with animations and models that move fluidly based on physics. The art style looks like it was made for the PlayStation One. It might take a while to get used to this crazy game, but it's fun.
The world is big and full of different things to do, which will keep the player interested for a few hours. It's still getting updates, and as one of the best free games on Itch.io, you should check it out, even if the trippy and abstract style is hard to get into at first.
Doki Doki Literature Club
- Developer : Team Salvato
- Gameplay/Genre : Visual Novel..... Among Others
Even though it looks like a normal Japanese visual novel, Doki Doki Literature Club is a unique game. It's very different from what most people expect, and it's worth going into it without knowing much about it.
People who are bored with visual novels should wait thirty minutes to an hour for the game to really start moving. The fact that the game is so popular on YouTube and other live sites shows that it's worth the ride.
We Become What We Behold
- Developer :
- Gameplay/Genre : Simulator
We Become What We Behold is an open-source, satirical game that pokes fun at the never-ending news loop we all live in. The game is very short, but it's worth the five minutes because it makes a good point about how the media affects how people act.
Taking shots of people doing different things changes the mini-society and even brings up some tough topics in a subtle way. It's hard to explain, but it makes sense and is very clever.
Baldi's Basics In Education and Learning
- Developer : Micah McGonigal
- Gameplay/Genre : Horror
One of the best scary games on Itch.io is Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning. The scary parts come from the main character, Baldi, and the nightmare-inducingly strange world the game is set in.
It looks like a simple, poorly made teaching game for kids, but after only a few minutes, the player realizes it's not what it seems to be.
Gacha Life PC
- Developer : Lunime
- Gameplay/Genre : Social
Gacha Life is a famous mobile game for both Android and iOS. It's like having a virtual dollhouse and hanging out with other people. Players can change the looks of up to eight chibi-style figures by adding different accessories. They can also chat with other players and non-player characters (NPCs) in online chat rooms.
The PC version of Penalty Kick Online, on the other hand, is not as complete as the mobile versions. It's more like a test than a real game. It's still being changed often, and it's getting closer and closer to the mobile version all the time.
Terra Nil Prototype
- Developer : Free Lives
- Gameplay/Genre : Simulator/Strategy
To my surprise, Terra Nil is a name-your-own-price game. It's one of the most creative and unique computer games on Itch.io. Other simulation games have the player build a city, run a household, or go about their daily life. Terra Nil doesn't have those tasks. Instead, the player has to fix up nature in an old-school pixel art world from the early 2000s.
The goal is to turn a barren wasteland into a paradise, and the player is in charge of an environment that is being rebuilt. It was one of the best games on Itch.io for a while, but the team that made it, Free Lives, has since put out a full version of the game. The full version is a lot better than the version that is still on itch.io, but the Terra Nil prototype proved the idea and still has a lot of content for its low price.
Stick It To The Stickman
- Developer : Free Lives
- Gameplay/Genre : Fighter/Roguelike
In a world based on physics, Stick It To The Stickman is a fast-paced single-player brawler with smooth stickman movements. The game calls itself a "rogue-lite," and while your progress is lost when you die, some changes you make last until your next death.
Stick It To The Stickman is another game by Free Lives, the same people who made Terra Nil. Like all of their other games, it's surprisingly deep for a free small game.
A Firm Handshake
- Developer : Torfi
- Gameplay/Genre : Art Game/Indie
A Firm Handshake is a short game that doesn't really have a point. In an off-brown world, the player has to shake hands with different people. As the game goes on, things get a little stranger.
Aside from being funny, the art style really shows how simple it is, and it's one of the few strange games that makes sense.
Coming Out Simulator 2014
- Developer : Nicky Case
- Gameplay/Genre : Simulator/Social
Itch.io has a few games that deal with the idea of Coming Out as an LGBT person. Being brutally honest about "half-truths" makes Nicky Case's Coming Out Simulator 2014 stand out from the rest.
The game puts the player in charge of the game's developer on the night they come out to their parents. The player can pick and choose what to say and do to really feel what it's like to be in that scary situation. It perfectly captures the feelings of fear and judgment.
