How do you play Minecraft on Steam?

Before we tackle adding Minecraft to Steam (unofficially, of course), let's chat about the two main versions available for PC: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

How do you play Minecraft on Steam?

Ever wanted to wrangle your Minecraft world with the familiar interface of Steam? While Minecraft isn't officially available on Steam, there are ways to get a taste of that Steam library goodness. Let's dive into why you might choose this route, the different versions of Minecraft, the benefits, and how to get things set up!

Why Minecraft with a Side of Steam?

There are a couple of reasons you might want to integrate Minecraft with Steam. Maybe you love the Steam overlay for chatting with friends while you game, or perhaps you just like having all your games in one place. Steam offers a layer of organization and ease of access that some players find appealing.

The Wonderful World of Minecraft Editions

Before we tackle adding Minecraft to Steam (unofficially, of course), let's chat about the two main versions available for PC: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Java Edition: This OG version of Minecraft is known for its vast modding community, allowing you to completely transform the game with custom content. It also offers cross-platform play with other Java Edition users, regardless of their operating system.

Bedrock Edition: This edition focuses on a more unified experience across different platforms like consoles and mobile devices. It boasts smoother performance and features some unique gameplay mechanics compared to Java Edition.

Benefits of a Faux-Steam Minecraft Experience

Even though Minecraft isn't officially on Steam, there are some advantages to having it appear in your library:

Steam Overlay Magic: Access that nifty Steam overlay while playing Minecraft! This lets you chat with friends on Steam without ever leaving the game.

Organization Nirvana: Having all your games, including Minecraft, in one place can be a real organizational win. No more hunting down shortcuts or remembering where you installed that one game.

The Illusion of Grandeur: Let's face it, having Minecraft in your Steam library just feels, well, cool. It adds to the collection and makes it feel like a part of your Steam family (even if it's adopted).

Steps to Add Minecraft to Steam

Alright, here's the nitty-gritty on how to add Minecraft to your Steam library (unofficially, remember?):

Locate Your Launcher: First things first, you need to find the location of your Minecraft Launcher. Open the launcher and then open your Task Manager (usually Ctrl + Alt + Del).  Click on "More details" if needed, then find the "Processes" tab. Right-click on any of the column headers and choose "Select columns" to ensure "Command Line" is displayed. Find "Minecraft Launcher" in the list, right-click on it, and select "Open file location."

Steam's Embrace:  Launch Steam and navigate to the "Games" section in the top left corner. Click on "Add a Non-Steam Game" at the bottom.

Browse Away:  A new window will pop up. Click "Browse" and navigate to the location you found in step 1 (where the Minecraft Launcher is stored).

Choosing Your Champion:  Here's the tricky part. You won't see "Minecraft Launcher" listed.  Instead, look for a file called "gamelaunchhelper.exe" and select that. Click "Open."

Steam-ify It (As Much as Possible):  You'll be back in the Steam window with "gamelaunchhelper.exe" selected. While it won't be a perfect Steam experience (you can't launch the game directly through Steam functions), it will now appear in your library!

Congratulations! You've unofficially added Minecraft to your Steam library. You can now see it alongside your other Steam games and (hopefully) enjoy the benefits of that sweet Steam overlay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Minecraft with Steam friends this way?

Unfortunately, no. This method simply adds Minecraft to your Steam library for organization purposes. You won't be able to use Steam friend features within Minecraft itself.

Will this affect my Minecraft game play?

Nope! Adding Minecraft to your Steam library this way won't change how the game actually plays.

Is there a way to get the full Steam experience with Minecraft?

Not at this time. Minecraft isn't officially available on Steam, so there's no way to get the complete Steam integration you might be hoping for.
