Indian Filter Coffee: An Amassing Preference Of The World

What makes a brewed cup of coffee in India so delightful and enriched in its flavor? One may say that it’s the inherent tradition and culture dating from old times; others may be under the opinion that it’s the love from the hands of Indianness, the pedigree of which can be traced as far back as the 17th century. Notwithstanding the cultural roots that go into the brewing by love, Indian Filter Coffee’s history is nestled within the South Indian districts, first introduced by Baba Sudan, who was a Sufi saint. He stole some coffee seeds from Yemen and brought them to the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka to sow them. Since then, South Indian coffee has had a calling in the world to be singled out as the hub of the finest coffee.

What makes Filter Coffee worth the sip?

The very tradition of filter coffee originated in South India. The special technique employed in the process of making filter coffee involves the use of a filter called the “dabara set”. Owing to its regional and cultural context, the coffee goes by other names like “Degree Coffee”, “Madras Coffee” and others. When a similar technique is used by employing an Indian filter outside of India, the coffee brewed is hence termed Filter Kaapi.

The aroma? Taste? The process? Or the uniqueness? Perhaps, everything goes into the making of this coffee to be so authentic. The fresh smell of coffee beans, the satisfactory process of pouring decoction into milk, everything must charm the taste buds and olfactory senses in you to heighten your mood!

Health Upgrades besides a refined taste bud

There are several health benefits that you can derive besides the refining taste that filter coffee has to offer. Due to filter coffee’s healing benefits, it has remedial uses and can enhance not only your taste buds but also your well-being and digestive system. Enlisted below are some of the ways in which you can benefit from Filter Kaapi…

  • The Use Of Chicory Root: There’s a general use of chicory(pertaining to the use of its root) involved in the making of filter coffee. The chicory root is rich in manganese and vitamin B6, which improves brain health. Sometimes, as an entire substitute, or, partial, it is employed in the making of filter coffee, with a greatly reduced amount of caffeine. Besides brain functioning, it also heals any inflammation and improves the body’s immune system.
  • Regulates Sugar Content in Blood: The chicory used in making filter coffee has been researched to be bearing minerals that cut down excessive sugar in the blood. This helps in the prevention of diabetes. Chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant found in coffee also maintains pH level of blood by reducing the absorption of glucose.
  • Fiber and Better Digestion: Raw chicory root has a content of 68% inulin, a prebiotic fiber consisting of indigestible fructose molecules. It helps the digestive system to absorb more nutrients and also helps in constipation and improving function of the bowel.

When Tradition Meets Filtered Tastes

The Filter Kaapi, as it is popularly known, meets its heart of origin in the “temple town” of Kumbakonam. The Filter Coffee, exclusive to one of a kind, can be found in Kumbakonam, a city in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. It owes its uniqueness to the special technique and Robusta and Arabica varieties of coffee beans employed in the making, proportioning the coffee bean extract and chicory to 70:30.

The special name given to it is Kumbakonam Degree Coffee, of which the term ‘degree’ is a derogatory word from the culminated usages of chicory and the local pronunciation ‘tikery’. The production of Kumbakonam Degree Coffee is exclusive to its own city, and they have a “secret recipe” that allows the brewing of Filter Coffee to retain its original aromatic and pleasing flavor.
